# Who I am and why I teach:

A group of TAs for UW's introductory computer science classes. Being part of this group was my introduction to teaching.
When I was a kid, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up and I still had no idea when I reached college. By chance I enrolled in a computer science class, and it changed my life. I was lucky enough to have some highly skilled, non-intimidating professors who, in time, also became great teaching mentors.
Although I found my way to the computer science field, it disturbed me how close I came to missing it. I had no idea what computer science was. I had heard the name 'computer science' before but and knew it was what some of my classmates' parents did but that was it. I figured that if I, who grew up in the Puget Sound area just south of Edmonds, had no idea what computer science was, how would other students who didn't have the luxury of being surrounded by tech companies have any chance of finding out about it? I decided I wanted to share it with as many people as I could.
In the beginning I worked as an undergraduate TA, encouraging students who had already decided to enroll in computer science. I also did some K12 outreach to try to encourage more students to try enrolling in a computer science course. When I first discovered that it was possible to teach computer science at the college level with a master's degree, I immediately knew that was the path I wanted to go down.
I teach because I want to give my students the life-changing experience computer science has given me. The confidence, sense of accomplishment and the ability to support themselves and possibly, if need be, their whole family.
# Website navigation tips:
The blue banner at the top of all the pages on this site will allow you to select the next page to navigate to. Just move your mouse over the menu title and a dropdown list will appear. If you click one of the options in the list, you will be taken to that page. All list options are webpages except those under the DOCUMENTATION heading which are PDF files.
Some of the pages contain links to external documents, like the webpages I have created for each of the classes I have taught. All external links will initially display as a different color and as underlined to make them easier to spot.
This portfolio is organized into four parts:
- Documentation: links to information about me: my CV, teaching philosophy and persona evaluation.
- Curriculum Development: description, discussion and examples of my work in the classroom. This includes both newly created teaching materials, rewritten materials, lessons learned from online teaching and examples of coursework.
- Beyond the Classroom: information about all the service activities I have participated in besides working with students in the classroom. This includes information about college committees, advising, creating reusable materials and working with other faculty accross the college and accross the state.
- Letters of Support: descriptions from my students, colleagues and collaborators about their experiences working with me.
